A Renovation Success Story – The Brick Breeden Fieldhouse at Montana State University

Brick Breeden Fieldhouse is about 55 years old like most University venues it’s high use, you know from sunup till sundown, into the evenings we have practices competition’s going on, so it’s no
different in that regard. One of our challenges is how do we make all those activities
through the course the day happen One of the constraints too with this
building was that we were dealing with outdated equipment and, you know, when we pulled
things out we were always wondering was it gonna go back in? The biggest thing with the seating and the chairs was, although almost
all… …almost all the lower-level seating was bench seating – and we were having a real
challenge, when we didn’t have a full house of getting people to sit in a lower level seats even though
they’re closer to the courtside and a better seat At the fieldhouse we have a theater grid
that allows us to play in a half-house setting to a capacity of around 3500 When they did a renovation thirteen
years ago they left bench seating on the100 level and that was difficult to explain to a
Broadway patron why they were paying high dollar for a seat in which they could bring their own
stadium seat – I mean, they needed that for comfort and so one other things that we wanted to achieve in the project was to be able to increase our price level capacity for that lower price level like most University venues, funding
isn’t always readily available so you end up in a situation where you
have to maximize what you have and you’re only really able to maximize that or get
maximum life out of the equipment that you have through the relationships you have with people who can keep it running In this facility Tutt Construction and Hussey Seating have always been a great partner of ours Jeff and Jared are based out of Billings,
which is only two hours away many times in the past when we’ve had challenges
with our seats they’re here day-of, or first thing the
very next day to help us out We started working with Jeff and Jared
on this project, two to three months before we actually got the go-ahead from
University that it was gonna proceed and that way we had a head start, we had – we knew
what seat counts were they also knew what some of our challenges were The design phase featured an extreme amount of
collaboration, and again because we had a relationship with Tutt, and also with Hussey – we would
be able to go into a meeting and say to Jeff or Jared here’s ideally what we want to do and
then they were able to come back a week later to listen we’ve talked to the team at Hussey, here’s what we can do to make
this work, and will this work for you guys Working with Tutt Construction and Hussey Seating they were the ones are able to take what we thought we had in our head and make it a reality and I don’t think at any time during that
collaboration did they ever come back and say nope we can’t do that – it was always let us go back, let us visit with the folks at Hussey and see what we can do and come back
with solutions for you – which from my standpoint is exactly how things should work We’re gonna have points in the season
where we have a Thursday night basketball game and a Saturday basketball game. The ease of operation with these bleachers will allow us to put the seats down, close ’em clean underneath there and then reverse that process and get the seats back and out and up in a quick and efficient manner But the seating is the one thing that people are coming in and they’re talking about
because they have a chair back now You know longtime season-ticket holders who have
cheered the Bobcats on while sitting on a bench now have a cup holder, they have a chair back – I mean
they feel like they’re, you know, living a life of luxury And for our broadway, it took our capacity – our p1
capacity – from about 400 seats up to over eight hundred seats, which ends up being a… …a revenue generator the makes everyone
happy – the shows, it makes us happy it makes our partners happy And from our standpoint as a customer we
pushed, Tutt went back and pushed Hussey, and at the end of the day we
got the project that we wanted. I think that Tutt Construction and Hussey Seating we don’t consider ’em contractors, we consider them a partner and they have a vested interest in this building and
they’ve always been great teammates to us At the end of the day great product has to be backed
up through great relationships and that relationship with Hussey and
Clarin is certainly one that I’ve enjoyed over the course of my career
