Behind the Scenes of The Revenger’s Tragedy

There are a lot of dramatists at the
time of Shakespeare who were writing horror plays, thrillers. It’s a
type of [play] that’s completely English and it starts around 1605/1610. They’re horror plays in which people see grotesque frightening… you see somebody taking
revenge and you get on the side of the person who’s taking the revenge. You can
play with somebody taking revenge and so he punishes the people who have done bad things to him and he gets caught up in a terrible helter-skelter of events. Anyway, how did I come to choose The Revenger’s Tragedy? It has very modern themes. But they’re in
fact not modern themes, they seem to be modern themes. I think it’ll open a lot of people to say I’m saying something about Milan. I’m not saying anything about Milan, but it is about how we live now but I try to connect how
we live now to what’s something that’s totally universal. I’m completely not
interested in doing something satirical We like to do a play that’s
good for the actors that we want to work with. We have to remember that revenge is only
nostalgia. You just have to let it go. No, revenge is very very common and
that’s because it’s a powerful theme in life. It happens in the classroom, it
happens between brothers and sisters, it happens between parents and children I mean. You know, we need to kind of wake up. Revenge normally happens because somebody’s honour has been impugned and it’s absolutely central to the human
condition and that’s why we need to examine it
like why we do these stupid things and it’s pointless saying it’s stupid because
it goes on happening. THE REVENGER’S TRAGEDY
