Douglas Maxwell on I Can Go Anywhere | Traverse Theatre

I Can Go Anywhere is the story of a
young guy called Jimmy who’s seeking Asylum in the UK on the basis
that he’s a Mod His only connection the whole of Glasgow Is this academic who wrote a
book about youth culture You know that had a Mod on the front And he’s tracked him down to try
and get a reference for his Substantive Interview that will be
coming up The academic’s called Stevie And he’s in trouble of his own As far as having it on at Christmas it’s just weird I said to the Traverse, I can Christmasify it if you want I mean I can put a Christmas tree in it I’ve got no integrity I’ll put up a Christmas tree on Paul Weller at the top of it, fine You know? But no no they said they wanted Just a straight play I’d had a conversation we were talking about Gatekeeping and it just struck me I wonder if you could write a play that was just built From those moments of please may I come in And show me your credentials not just in The most on the nose obvious way Which is the asylum seeker coming to the door But in lots of subtler ways, relationships,
those conversational moments when Somebody asks you how authentic are
you really Are you as authentic as me And that this would be a boxing match of
a play A conversational argument play And in close up so it could get really into
the detail of cultural identity and Culture versus a political identity and
importance of each and all those little Tiny gatekeeping moments It’s directed by Eve Nicol who’s a real up-and-comer Writer/director she’s a star Part of this new movement of theatre artists that are Taking over Scottish theatre and they’re amazing It’s steeped in music it’s steeped In pop culture, it’s steeped in youth
culture It’s an alternative history of Britain in a sense In terms of where Jimmy’s getting all his ideas from It should be just quality and intelligence And fun though It’s not hard work It’s Christmas
