Hart House Theatre – All About Us

Hart House Theatre – All About Us

Hi, I’m Doug Floyd, general manager of Hart
House Theatre, and I’ve had the pleasure of working here for well over ten years now.
And for me, Hart House Theatre is more than a celebrated historical venue; it’s a community
hub for students and artists, it’s a cultural destination for the city of Toronto, and of
course, it’s U of T’s performing arts leader since 1919. The great Robertson Davies called Hart House
Theatre “the cradle of Canadian theatre,” and it’s launched the careers of many great
Canadian artists, such as Donald Sutherland, Lorne Michaels, Dora Mavor Moore, and Norman
Jewison – and that’s just to name a few. Currently, we produce a season of four shows,
with a mixed repertoire of classical and contemporary pieces: Shakespeare, musicals, and of course,
plays by Canadian playwrights, are all featured. And, we have an impressive audience that come
see that season. Over ten thousand patrons come each and every year to fill this beautiful,
450-seat space. Now, when you add our rentals and other festivals, we have a total of 35
000 people a year that come in and out of these doors, keeping this historical venue
very much alive and well. As a cultural hub for the University of Toronto
and the Toronto theatre community, we offer many opportunities beyond coming to see a
show. Throughout the process of putting together our season, we engage students, community
members, and professionals as performers, stage managers, designers, and crew members,
and much more. We are very pleased of our reputation as being a launching pad for the
very best emerging artists this city has to offer. Hart House Theatre also plays a significant
role in student life at U of T. On top of having students involved onstage and backstage
in our season, we also offer specific programming geared towards U of T students. We are very
proud, also, to be the host venue for many U of T historical shows, some of which date
back to the 1930s. So, whether you’ve seen a show with us before,
are a regular subscriber, or are interested in getting involved, we invite you to explore
our website, or come visit us in person, and come see what’s onstage.
