Just Start Here 2020 | An Introduction
Just Start Here is a work in progress festival. We’ve got an artist called Stuart MacPherson, who’s from Dumfries, and he’s made a piece with filmmaker Emma Dove and sound recordist / field recordist Pete Smith that is charting the migration of the geese from Solway, in Dumfriesshire, to Svalbard to Svalbard, in the Arctic. We’ve got a totally new work in progress by the incredible visionary dance artist and artist/theatre-maker, Mele Broomes We’ve got Two Destination Language, who are a brilliant company based in the Borders who are trying out a new iteration of their site-specific, guerilla piece of performance called Lone Wolves. We’ve got loads of, kind of, scratch opportunities where artists are coming together for the very first time, and just creating something, trying something out, and sharing that, We’ve got DJ Ashanti Sharda, who is amazing. SUE ZUKI is going to do a set. So as well as work being shown, it’s also a space for conversation and trying to bring people – that maybe wouldn’t normally have the chance to cross paths, because we’re a national company – together to have those conversations. The Stove are catering, so there’ll be some delicious vegan food and that’s another key part of it, allowing folk space to come together and have a meal and, like, eat and chill as well. I guess what we hope to do is shine a light on the incredible stuff that is happening in different parts of the country, and the amazing work that artists are making. And then, also, just a little bit of that excitement of seeing something new, something that they haven’t seen before.
