Leaphia’s story

Leaphia’s story

( Inspiring music fades in ) No one in my family was like theatre orientated or anything like that. I didn’t really know anyone that ever went It was relatively unusual, where I’m from I’m quite working class and so… I was a bit of an oddball I think to a lot of people around me. I got selected to go, kind of as far as I know quite randomly on a school trip I was told it was an english literature day for A level students, and to my horror it was all drama all day long and it was Rose Bruford, and the whole day was basically this is how you light a set on stage and these are sonnets, and this is how you might perform them and I hated every second of the whole day. I was told around lunch time that the day wasn’t going to finish at the time a normal school day finishes that we were going to have to come to The Globe and watch Anthony and Cleopatra, which I was so gutted about I can’t even tell you! I remember… yeah coming in dreading it and not thinking that a theatre would look like the way The Globe is, I think I was imagining like plush sort of red velvet seats and sort of musty smells sort of thing so I think I quite liked that it was outside. And I remember laughing at jokes and I don’t know why in that. I don’t know that I had particularly got a- I didn’t have a book beforehand of, oh you know jokes in Jacobean English or anything. I sort of remember going up to the, the stage at the end when everyone was sort of leaving The Globe to go back on the coach and sort of being left behind and everyone going ahead of me and looking at the the stage, and sort of being like these are just wooden planks! You know, for the last two hours I was convinced this was Ancient Egypt! And thinking… How do you do that! How do you… how do you do that? It’s just sort of wood! And then I was kind of really cross that I’d fell for it. And then on the coach I sat next to someone who’d sort of been going on about different youth theatres and stuff like National Youth Theatre, that sort of thing and I had really not been interested on the way to The Globe. But on the way back home I was a bit like You know… Not that I care, because I’m slightly too cool for theatre. But if you could just like go over ( laughs ) What all these youth theatre things you’re involved in are and… What’s the National Youth Theatre and how would I get involved Not that I want to! You know. A bit too cool, like, but yeah tell me. And it sort of… in a nutshell changed my life really. ( music fades up ) ( music fades out )
