  2. Rappresentazione musicalmente e vocalmente bella,ma…..scenograficamente seppur piacevole ha sacrificato ambientazioni poeticamente più pertinenti ai dettami Puccini ed al periodo storico in cui si svolge.Mancano il SOGNO è LA POESIA. Comunque BRAVI!

  3. Not that I have anything against Butterfly, but I really wanted Fedora. Replacing a rare-ish opera with one of the most common does not seem like an improvement.

  4. The music and singing was outstanding. The production is ugly. Furniture, costumes have nothing to do with Japanese culture.

  5. I loved it! Have seen this one many times, but never set in a different time than the original. The Soprano is a lioness. And I just adored that Butterfly takes her life in front of Pinkerton, having heard him call "Butterfly", here in a more intimate way. Just fantastic. I only wish I had been there.

  6. Thanks to all. Being able to live stream from Zimbabwe and learn from the comments of others is a marvelous experience for me. The singing was truly beautiful, the production, only the second I have seen, quite fascinating. Cannot wait for next week!

  8. A really fascinating take on the title character: instead of the usual innocent-victim/teenager, this Butterfly is clearly missing a few sandwiches in the picnic basket and revels in fantasy. Grigorian is amazing to watch, because she truly nails that. So many other amazing moments, like the umbrella walk during the Act Two interlude. Beautifully and courageously done by all involved.

  9. ¡ BRAVO ! Marvelous production. I have seen a lot of productions of this beautiful opera, and this one is excellent. Production, cast, orchestra, everything. 
    Miss Grigorian is simply wonderful, she deserves a very big applause, hugs and kisses. Her voice, her acting are excellent. This role is very demanding, and she performs it with an excellence grade that not all the sopranos sing it. Congratulations to miss Grigorian !

  11. The praise given to this mediocre performance is proof enough of opera’s demise. Only the soprano is of a high standard the rest vary from ok to ordinary and the conductor hasn’t got a clue of how to infuse drama into the score. To all those who thing this is great I urge you to listen to the Karajan/Freni/Pavarotti recording to hear what this opera is really all about.

  13. Besides the wannabe Regietheater redundant misery, regressing us to the mid 90s, sponsored by Ikea, I assume? the singers were all artists. Great development of Cio Cio San, especially the voice that grew stronger and rounder as the show progressed. Loved the tenor, with his virility and well executed, sexy top notes. Sharpless, beautiful voice.

  14. Singing is wonderful, but really am not sure about the sets and costumes? I found it hard to relate no matter how hard I tried.

  15. Dreary rendition of the score. If people think this is good then there is no future for opera. Ridiculous concept of this masterpiece. She has a lovely voice but it’s not a Butterfly yet. Pompous asses in the curtain call.

  16. I've seen Madama Butterfly many, many times and this is, by far, the best. I want this on CD! And, Asmik Gregorian is incredible!

  17. This is why I hate opera now. A messy crap filled production trying and failing to hide the fact that it is really just "stand-and-sing" in travesti; mediocre singing ( does anyone really think the tenor to be outstanding???); camp passing for acting. I am sure, that to some, listeners and viewers, this is the piece de resistance. Yawn.

  18. Does every opera house have to surrender to the contemporary set and costume? What has happened? The very production as contemporary makes no sense to water down and does take from the given libretto's heart — short cuts of cost or reason to find audience interest? The level of drama is diminished…the character is diminished…the cultural contrasts of the intended time diminishes the historical fact of the libretto…human behaviors are reflected well from the original intended production, so the current audience can enter and arrive into an opera house to learn that the arts do give us our same behaviors and beliefs as another time??? And more look at the geniuses who created at risks under their living time and cultures…with NO one and nothing around to interfere and distract the given created moment with these gathered artists.

  19. Lord spare us another trendy Scandinavian production. Pinkerton in dressing gown and socks, Goro pointing out the features of the house in a magazine. The sailors can't even drill properly! The final scene is a travesty of Puccini's tremendous sense of theatre, the stage directions simply ignored – but then, this characterises the whole production. The tempi are too fast, the orchestral playing too light, without any musical depth. It's all so pallid and bloodless. No one here seems to understand.the strong red-bloodedness of the Italians in general, and Puccini in particular.The wild enthusiasm of the audience for this very mediocre production says it all. The production reminds me of a Danish production of Die Walküre: Valkyries in silly black bat-like costumes, drinking from bottles of I know not what on a rooftop with a glass gazebo. Nothing of the Wagnerian power and richness of orchestration. I once saw a Finnish production of Tosca. Unusual, but in the spirit at least of Puccini. The Finns seem to have red blood running in their veins. The Swedes and Danes seem to be plain wimpy and drippy, if their operatic productions are anything by which to judge. I will certainly not be going to Scandinavia for musical experiences. They are even wimpier than the British, and that is saying something!

  20. Excellent musical performance, excellent orchestra and singers BUT terrible presentation. Not accurate in any way as Puccini devised the opera. Everything is wrong, customs, the house, bad acting. What a pity I have seen this opera since 1956 and this is perhaps the most incorrect staged version of Puccini's masterpiece. What a pity!! They even forgot that the opera takes place in 1904.

  21. If you don’t like the production which is certainly not my favorite just close you eyes and listen to Asmik, her voice is gorgeous. Brava Asmik!

If Puccini were alive, he would ask that his name be removed from this.  Rule of thumb for all presentations of art – Is it displayed in accordance with the intent of the artist?  In this case, no, it is not.  Sets and costumes here destroy what COULD have been wonderful!  It's another case of a director trying to be cute with somebody else's work.

  23. don't know what you all were thinking with this set and that staging …. stage movement for opera singers anybody? Sings pretty good, but that's all … Sorry this is not good otherwize.

  24. I swear Asmik Grigorian is the greatest singing actress since Callas. Some vocal concerns but if you want to watch something else, try the end of Suor Angelica (also on Youtube). We need her at the Met so badly………….and the tenor is also excellent. Not a big fan of the production but at least we have a real boy not a puppet………….

  25. Dislikers….. Get over it ! At least some thought has gone into the production, like it or not. Surely, if you have your way, opera won't move on at all, and we'll see and hear the same old production in every theatre. I bet it was wonderful being there, and thanks should go to Operavision and the Royal Swedish Opera for letting us see it.
