Month of Commedia dell’Arte: Improvise or not to improvise?

in an actor’s life one of the most
popular questions you are asked is how can you memorize all those lines the
last time they asked it to me I said well there are different techniques but actually memorizing a text is not the most difficult part in creating a show oh yes the true you can always improvise yes, improvisation can be a very important part of a creating process but I believe the are some misunderstandings about how an improvisation works you can improvise by a given theme by a givensituation by even dramaturgy but you don’t improvise with anything at all but this topic gives me the possibility to connect with Commedia dell’Arte’s world because there is a common belief about Commedia dell’Arte’s actors they say that Commedia dell’Arte’s actors were extremely skilled in improvising they were so skilled that they could create a new show every time in front of the audience yes but no the truth is that Commedia dell’Arte’s actors had a lot of plots scenes and dialogues memorized and they were skilled in understanding the tastes of the audience and the rearrange the show accordingly for example two actors were playing a love scene and they could feel immediately if the audience was receptive to that scene so once they got back to the curtain they said to
their colleagues okay the audience likes love scenes let’s play another one the
one we played the last week in that way we could create a new show every time but it was a matter of putting different elements together there are of course
some situation called “lazzi” in Commedia dell’Arte in which there is written “Pantalone enters, Arlecchino enters the argument is topic and then they leave
and they have a lot of dialogues and jokes memorized but I have the
possibility and the freedom to rearrange the dialogue with slight
changes their improvisation ability took years and decades of practice they
didn’t improvise themselves as skilled actors as actor while you are improvising you have the freedom of doing what you want and the audience can have the feeling that everything is happening on the moment and nothing is planned but this requires a strong practice and many years of studies behind
