The Tempest: Act 1, Scene 2 | Shakespeare’s Globe | Rent or Buy on Globe Player

What is the time o’ the day? Past the mid season. At least two glasses. The time ‘twixt six
and now Must by us both be spent most preciously. Is there more toil? Since thou dost give me
pains, Let me remember thee what thou hast promised,
Which is not yet perform’d me. How now? moody?
What is’t thou canst demand? My liberty. Before the time be out? no more! I prithee, remember I have done thee worthy
service; Told thee no lies, made thee no mistakings,
served Without or grudge or grumblings: thou didst
promise To bate me a full year. Dost thou forget
From what a torment I did free thee? No. Thou dost, and think’st it much to tread the
ooze Of the salt deep,
To run upon the sharp wind of the north, To do me business in the veins o’ the earth
When it is baked with frost. I do not, sir. Thou liest, malignant thing! Hast thou forgot
The foul witch Sycorax, who with age and envy Was grown into a hoop? hast thou forgot her? No, sir. Thou hast. Where was she born? speak; tell
me. Sir, in Algiers. O, was she so? I must
Once in a month recount what thou hast been, Which thou forget’st.

  1. Did anyone see Bradley James up in the top left corner at 1:50? He's the guy with his hand up to his face in the audience 🙂 wow!!

  2. I enjoyed this play so much when I saw it on stage last Summer, and I look forward to enjoying it again on screen. It's amazing how the text is transformed when played. When I read it I didn't think it was a comedy, but watching it on stage I laughed and laughed.

  3. Hast thou forgot the foul witch Sycorax, who with age and envy, was grown into a hoop? Hast thou forgot her?"
    "……no, Sir…."
    "Thou hast."

  4. ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS PRODUCTION.  I wish I could go back in time and watch it all again.

  5. Is this online anywhere to watch in full??? I've been waiting over a year to see this. Someone please help D:

  6. It was such a privilege to see this live!!!!! Colin Morgan is such an amazing actor. (Okay, EVERYONE in the show was amazing but I went because of Colin.)

  7. I just read this play in my Shakespeare class at school and we saw a production of it a couple days ago. I love Colin's Ariel! The first word i thought to describe him was "bird-like" just the way he moves, but it makes total sense since he's an air spirit!! and how his version of ariel really does seem to have no idea what Prospero is talking about! i just love this clip! i really want to buy the DVD

  8. I love Ariel's acting, his expression when he has forgotten. This performance displays elements of the text which I completely missed while watching the BBCWorldwide version (on youtube, but not great). Brilliant.

  9. I think Colin's performance of Ariel is one of my favorites, and that's saying something because that's one of my favorite Shakespearean characters.

  10. I know everyone is talking about how good Colin is (and I agree), I really want to draw attention to Roger Allam as Prospero. It is a very difficult character to make likable because he is so all – powerful, manipulative and possessive of his power, yet he pulls it off with aplomb! He is also brilliant in Henry IV parts 1 and 2 as Falstaff.

  11. I really don't like this version, in my opinion this scene is actually really sad and tragic and their playing it like comedy, really forced comedy. it doesn't work.

  12. We were watching this in english yesterday and as soon as Colin came on screen and my teacher left the room, all you could hear from the back of the classroom was 'he's so beautiful' over and over haha . But Roger is incredible too oh wow!

  13. I only know Colin Morgan. Unfortunately, I don´t know the other actors (I´m not British). They are good. By the way, what character does Colin Morgan play? (I don´t understand English very well)

  14. I'm geeking because I once visited this theatre and walked on that stage and all I am thinking is either I walked where colin morgan walked or he walked where I walked…. such a nerd 😂

  15. In loads of versions they have that dark twisted sincerity which, don't get me wrong, is fine; but pretty unoriginal. This ver. with Ariel's /comedic/ dopiness and idiosyncrasy bodes well! Really refreshing to see!

  16. Moody…! Lol. Is anyone else in love with Ariel? Y’know…, just asking for a friend. ahem Don’t judge me. I mean, them..don’t judge them.
